Nigerian abbattoirs in poor state

The Nigerian of Private Veterinary Practitioners (NAPVP) has deplored the poor state of abattoirs in the country, especially the Port Harcourt abattoir in Rivers State as shown in a satellite television, Aljazeera.

In a letter to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, the expressed displeasure over the ugly scenes of the Nigerian abattoir shown in a 30-minute documentary on the Port Harcourt Trans Amadi Meat by Al-Jazeera on November 1, which was entitled: “Working Man’s death.”

According to the National President of NAPVP, Dr Abdul Gani Enahoro, aside from the fact that the abattoir poses a great threat to public health, the glimpses of the ugly scenes have been running on You-tube as well as still photo-shots on the internet. The group condemned what the so-called abattoirs and meat sources for human consumption have nationally degenerated to in some states.

While the group could not understand the reason for the choice of Rivers State in this exposition, it equally regretted that the state government does not deem it fit to reply to its open letter or the documentary.

For avoidance of doubt, NAPVP has drawn the attention of government and concerned Nigerians to a You-tube video and see some of the pictures. The doctors said the documentary was an absolute conviction that 99.9 per cent of Nigerian cities have scenes similar to the one shown on Al-Jazeera.

Enahoro said that this development was a great challenge to the government both at the state and national level. The president called for construction of a modern abattoir in the state as part of people-oriented programmes of Amaechi's administration.

He promised that his association and the entire veterinary workforce in Nigeria would partner the Rivers State Government in achieving international standards and best ethical practices.
“By our training as veterinarians, we shall deploy our resources effectively as team-leaders in modern abattoirs once the conducive environment is put in place for normal controls,” Enahoro added.
