Meat importers warned of temporary plant closures

Botswana meat importers are warning of potential supply disruption, following the temporary closure of two of the country’s processing facilities.

The Botswana Meat Commissioning (BMC) played down the impact on supply, urging customers to continue to place orders as it worked to minimise disruption.

The national Veterinary Authority is making the two abattoir and processing facilities subject to temporary closure over the next few weeks. In a statement, the BMC said: “The plants will be closed while the Commission’s management team deals with a number of maintenance issues raised during recent veterinary inspections.

“While concerned over the disruption caused, BMC Commissioners welcome the EU approvals system, administered through the Botswana Department of Veterinary Services, and acknowledge this is a critical element of the market access afforded to Botswana cattle producers. They also appreciate and value its role in providing consumers in all our European markets with confidence when they purchase meat products from Botswana.”
